Book AppointmentHow Dry Eye Works
Dry eye is what it sounds like; your eyes aren’t producing enough moisture to function the way they’re meant to. A fault in the tear production process can be the main culprit. Your tears are comprised of 3 layers:
- The oily outer layer
- The watery middle layer
- The inner mucus layer
Dry eye can occur when the glands that produce these elements of your tears are not functioning properly or become inflamed.
Some common signs and symptoms of dry eye can include:
- A stinging, burning, or scratchy feeling in your eyes
- Blurred vision or eye fatigue
- Eye redness
- Watery eyes

Our Dry Eye Treatments
The first step to finding relief from your dry eye symptoms is visiting us for a comprehensive eye exam, where our team can determine the underlying cause of your dry eyes. Following a thorough exam, we can prepare a treatment plan to help you regain your comfort.
Medicated Eye Drops
RESTASIS eye drops are prescription drops that focus on treating the underlying cause of chronic dry eye. These drops focus on inflammation management and increasing your eyes’ ability to produce tears.
Xiidra is a prescription eye drop that targets the source of inflammation that can cause uncomfortable dry eye symptoms. When used twice daily, you can experience lasting relief in as little as 2 weeks.
Xiidra eye drops are meant to be used twice per day.
Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs can help manage dry eyes when your tears are draining from your eyes too quickly. These tiny devices are placed into your tear ducts to slow down how fast tears leave the surface of your eyes.
There are 2 types of punctal plugs:
- Temporary or dissolving—This type of plug is usually made of collagen and naturally dissolves in a few days or months.
- Semi-permanent—These plugs are made of medical plastics and designed for long-term use. Your eye doctor can remove these plugs if needed.
We can carefully examine your eyes to determine the best type of plug and size for your needs.
Lid Scrubs
Lid scrubs help remove debris from the eye area and help keep your eye clean to reduce the chance of developing dry eye. The pads are oil-free and ready to use.
Amniotic Membranes
Amniotic membranes contain certain properties that can help treat dry eyes. When an amniotic disk is placed on a contact lens, the contact lens helps regenerate a patient’s eye to a normal state.
No other treatment provides such restorative features that can heal a damaged cornea and treat dry eyes simultaneously. The usage of amniotic membranes has been shown in clinical studies to heal the eye, soothe eye pain, and improve overall vision.
